News from Room 10 August 30, 2010

What a terrific first week we had! I have enjoyed getting to know the kids over the past few days. We are going to have an exciting year!

On Friday, your child should have brought home a school planner. We will use these planners during the school day. At the end of each day, we take five minutes or so to reflect on what we have learned and the day’s events. The students then record their own “big idea” about the day. Please read over the planner each week and then return it to school on Monday.

Last week, we brainstormed rules for our class. There are 3 main rules:
1. Be Kind: Share, respect others, talk about problems that come up, raise your hand, etc.

2. Be Safe: Push in your chair, keep your hands and feet to yourself, walk, etc.

3. Work hard: Pay attention to the activities, do your best, don’t give up!, etc.

Our school implements a stick system to help students be aware of their behaviors. Your child will begin each day with 5 sticks. I do not over emphasis this system, but will use it discreetly to help students become more aware of their actions. Each stick is worth $.25 of class money which can be earned for various rewards like extra choice time or small prizes. No one will want to lose any sticks!

Essentially, a child loses a stick if they continue to choose to break one of the class rules after being given a warning. After a stick is lost, I will quietly speak to the student about the misbehavior. If your child loses two sticks, they will also lose 5 minutes of recess which will be spent speaking with me. If your child loses three sticks on one day, a note will be sent home to you. If four sticks are lost, the student will need to visit the office. PLEASE contact me if you have any questions. Above all, I try to “look for the positive & praise”!

Please complete the attached sheets and return the work by Friday.
Please take a few moments to fill out the family questionnaire.

Upcoming Events & Reminders:
Back to School Sock Hop! This Thursday from 6pm-8pm at the school.
No school on Friday, Sept. 3 and Monday, Sept. 6.
