Book Carnival
May 9-13

Bring a Book, Take a Book!
All students are invited to visit this exciting book exchange.
For each book you bring in, you get to take a book.
Last year over 1,000 books were exchanged!

This event will take place in the bus drop off area
during 4th grade class times.

Teachers will be bringing students and sending students to the event.
Once a book is donated to the exchange, it is available for someone to choose. Please only bring in books you are ready to part with and that are in good condition. New and used books are accepted.

It's No Joke!

Next Thursday and Friday will be the Ohio tests for English Language Arts. Practice tests and resources can be found at our Google Classroom site. Every student has log in information for this site. We use the site almost weekly, so they are all very comfortable with navigating the site. The site is secure so that only those with school google accounts have access.

Homework is online!

I have put this week's nonfiction article and questions online. We have been going into Google Classroom so the students should be familiar with how to log in, complete and submit the assignment. Of course, they can still complete the work the "old-school" way...with good old paper and pencil! Assignments are due on Thursday for 5 points. Late assignments are worth 3 points.

New goals!

We are reading the book...

We are also using Google Classroom almost daily to complete in-class reading and a writing assignments. This week, we have been working on the procedural "stuff". Next week, all students will be working online to compose and publish an article for a school newspaper! I can't tell you how excited we are to be taking on this project! Look for our first issue of the Clipper Times to be out the last week of January!

Homework Info

Language Arts Homework

You are responsible for getting this work completed...not your family. However, I encourage you to read this with someone and it is fine for an adult to help you.

A passage and a set of questions will come home every Monday or Tuesday. It will be due on Thursday.

You will get 5 points for returning the work on time. You will get 3 points if you bring it in on Friday. There are no points for anything later than Friday. It is counted both in your Reading and Writing grade.

Please be sure you are using correct capital letters and punctuation.

Every answer should be in complete sentences.

TAKE YOUR TIME. Questions that ask you to explain normally need 3-4 sentences.

Underline your evidence. Support your answers with the text.  Some questions you can’t do this for, but you can do this for MOST of the questions.

Why are we focusing on teaching this? Well I found another website Ms. Jordan Reads that explains this...

Non-fiction text structures refer to HOW an author organizes information in an expository text. When faced with a new text, students can observe the organizational pattern of the text and look for cues to differentiate and pinpoint which of the text structures was used by the author. Students can then organize their thinking to match the structure of the text, allowing for effective comprehension of the subject matter.
Why are the text structures important?
Understanding non-fiction text structures is critical for “Reading to Learn” (i.e., reading for information). Students should be familiar with the five most common text structures and should be able to identify each structure using signal words and key features. Understanding which text structure is used helps students monitor their understanding, while learning the specific content that is presented. These text structures need to be explicitly taught in the classroom.

Word Work

Well after several weeks of running around from spelling group to spelling group...there were 15 of them!!, I have simplified the process.

From now on, we will have ONE weekly lesson. Together as a class, we will brainstorm a list of words that coordinate with the lesson. Each student still has their own lists of words chosen with my help. They have a practice packet for the week that they have time each morning to work on. Then on Friday, the packets are collected and a test is given. They will be giving each other a "buddy" test. I am always giving tests as well, especially for those students who do better when I give them there words.

This week we are focusing on -tion and -sion words. We will be looking at root words on Tuesday to decide when to use -tion and when to use -sion.
